UQ Health Care is a not for profit company established by the University of Queensland to operate ‘beacon practices’ at Ipswich, Annerley and Logan. These practices are focused on providing clinical services which support and enhance the capacity of local general practice. In particular, we deliver services focused on complex patient types (e.g. adult complex/chronic disease, children with developmental problems, complex mental health needs and pain/palliative care services).
We have established clinics where GPs with special interests (GPwSIs) will work in parallel with specialists to manage complex patients. These clinics develop management plans to support the patient and their usual GP. As part of this approach we support these GPwSIs to further develop their skills via appropriate CPD or higher education (for example modules of the Masters of Medicine – General Practice). These GPwSIs work a period of time in our clinics part time before returning to their own/current practice – thus building the capacity of the General Practice sector.
